KPKT to Evaluate Mini Fire Station Proposal for Pulau Bruit

Daro:The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) will assess the necessity of establishing a mini fire station on Pulau Bruit, Daro, Sarawak, taking into account the area's fire risk index.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming stated that the study will help decide if the proposed fire station is required before any formal proposal is made in the future. This follows recurrent forest fires on the island, which prompted the inquiry from Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) during a session in the Dewan Rakyat.

Nga highlighted that the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) had already dispatched 27 personnel to manage three significant forest fires on Pulau Bruit between August 10 and September 13, affecting 42 hectares. The fires impacted areas including Jalan Tanjung Gelang, Kampung Bruit (29 hectares), Kampung Kut (eight hectares), and the road to Kampung Penuai (five hectares).

Furthermore, Nga mentioned that air quality in Sarawak is continually monitored through a network of stations operated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability and the Department of Environment. This network includes five monitoring stations, 12 continuous monitoring stations, and a mobile station.

Legal measures can be enforced against individuals who conduct open burning without authorization. Under Section 30(1)(a) and Section 30(2) of the Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance, offenders may face fines up to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, alongside additional fines for ongoing violations.
