Kuala Perlis-Satun Ferry Resumption To Boost Perlis Tourism – MB

Kuala perlis: Perlis expects tourist arrivals to reach between 5.5 million and six million this year following the resumption of the Kuala Perlis-Satun ferry service today, which is expected to further boost the state's tourism sector.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah stated that the reopening of the sea route, which had been suspended since the COVID-19 pandemic, is anticipated to facilitate the movement of tourists between Satun and Kuala Perlis. This resumption is expected to generate an economic spillover for local communities and contribute to the state's economy.

Abu Bakar expressed optimism that Kuala Perlis will attract more tourists from Thailand, enhancing state revenue and strengthening ties between Malaysia and Thailand, particularly between Perlis and Satun. He made these comments while welcoming a delegation from Satun at the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal.

The ferry service is also anticipated to alleviate congestion at the Padang Besar border crossing, especially during public holidays, by providing an alternative sea route for travelers between Kuala Perlis and Satun. The journey lasts about 40 minutes, offering visitors an alternative travel experience with coastal views.

Furthermore, Abu Bakar mentioned plans by the state government to install a floating pontoon to address berthing difficulties caused by fluctuating water levels and shallow waters at the ferry terminal. The state government is also exploring the reactivation of the Kuala Perlis-Satun Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro) service. Discussions are ongoing with several investors regarding a proposed RM500 million bridge extending about two kilometers into the sea to solve persistent shallow navigation channel issues.
