Kuala Lampur:High Point Worldwide:
Efforts by local defense companies to develop vehicle chassis domestically are expected to reduce the cost of procuring defense assets, aligning with the National Defence Industry Policy's goals to increase local content.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized the significance of chassis components, which make up about 30 percent of a land vehicle asset. He highlighted the importance of ensuring at least 30 percent of each asset uses local components to manage costs effectively.
During a press conference following his visit to local defense supplier High Point Worldwide Sdn Bhd (HPWW), Mohamed Khaled discussed the potential for local chassis development to reduce asset procurement costs and open up opportunities for the local defense industry in the global market. The visit was also attended by Defence Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali and Chief of Army General Tan Sri Azhan Md Othman.
The minister welcomed HPWW's initiative to develop two types of locally produced chassis for military vehicles, with completion expected next year. Furthermore, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) plans to prioritize local companies for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) contracts after the warranty period, reducing reliance on foreign companies currently holding contracts worth significant sums.
During the visit, Mohamed Khaled officiated the name of HPWW's three-tonne general-purpose truck, "Rentas," and announced plans to procure 34 of these vehicles, along with 100 "Kala" High Mobility Reconnaissance Vehicles (HMRV) and 163 "Tedung" weapon carriers. A total of 526 vehicles of various types, involving 18 variants, are expected to be delivered to the Army starting from the end of this month until 2028.
He also praised HPWW's commitment to the welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans, who compose 15 percent of the company's workforce, as a commendable effort to enhance the socioeconomic well-being of personnel post-service.
