Malaysia Supports Upcoming Thailand-Cambodia Border Talks, Says Anwar

Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced Malaysia's support for the upcoming border talks between Thailand and Cambodia, which are set to take place on June 14.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar expressed Malaysia's readiness to monitor the developments of the negotiations as the Chair of ASEAN 2025. He also offered Malaysia's cooperation in facilitating the talks. "I spoke with both the Prime Ministers (of Thailand and Cambodia). they have taken several measures that we support, namely the June 14 talks regarding the Thailand-Cambodia border dispute. I'm ready to follow and provide the cooperation (that is) required. So far, both governments have taken the stance of continuing negotiations amicably," Anwar stated after performing the solat sunat Aidiladha with about 15,000 congregants at Masjid Putra.

The border dispute gained attention following a brief skirmish on May 28 between Thai and Cambodian troops in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. In response, Cambodia announced plans to bring the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Thailand has emphasized its commitment to peaceful resolution through adherence to international law and existing agreements with Cambodia. Both countries have agreed to address the issue through the Joint Boundary Commission meeting scheduled in Phnom Penh on June 14, marking a significant step towards a peaceful long-term resolution.
