Police arrested a man and seized 112 units of fireworks worth an estimated RM400,000 in a raid on a building along Jalan Highway, Triang here last Friday. Bera district police Supt Zulkiflee Nazir said the raid was conducted at about 6 pm based on intelligence gathered on illegal sales of fireworks.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, police found a 54-year-old man believed to be the owner and caretaker of the fireworks stored in the building. The 112 units of fireworks are believed to be imported from China and stored without a valid licence. Supt Zulkiflee revealed this information during a media conference at the Bera district police headquarters.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the seized fireworks were of high value and rarely seen in local markets, suggesting that potential buyers were likely individuals with high income. The suspect has been remanded for three days from Saturday till today, and the case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957.
Meanwhile, Supt Zulkiflee mentioned that the police have approved about 30 licences for fireworks sales for the festive season. He emphasized that the seizure did not involve any legal licence holders. Each licence application is assessed based on location suitability, safety, and distance from residences. Premises that do not meet these requirements will not receive approval.
