Melaka: The Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) has confirmed that it has not received any resignations or withdrawals from its two council members appointed under the Democratic Action Party (DAP) quota. Mayor Datuk Shadan Othman stated that the appointments of these councillors remain valid, and they are expected to continue fulfilling their responsibilities as usual.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mayor Shadan Othman emphasized the distinction between political and administrative matters, indicating that any decision to resign or withdraw must originate from the individuals themselves. This statement was made during a media briefing following the MBMB 2026 Customer Day event. The mayor highlighted that in the absence of formal resignation requests, the council members are obliged to continue their duties.
Recent developments saw the Melaka DAP withdrawing support for the state government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. This political move came after the Melaka State Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, which permits the appointment of seven unelected state assemblymen, was passed in the Melaka State Legislative Assembly. The announcement of the DAP's withdrawal was made by Melaka DAP chairman Khoo Poay Tiong at a press conference attended by four DAP assemblymen: Allex Seah Shoo Chin, Kerk Chee Yee, Low Chee Leong, and Leng Chau Yen.
During the press conference, Khoo Poay Tiong was also reported to have declared that all local authority councillors appointed by the previous state government would resign. However, MBMB's current stance indicates no formal resignation processes have been initiated by its DAP-appointed council members.
