Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating five individuals suspected of disseminating false information regarding the increase in petrol and diesel prices on Threads. It said that three of the five individuals have been called up to have their statements recorded for investigation purposes.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, complaints received indicated that the content shared by these individuals concerning fuel price hikes was false and misleading, potentially causing anxiety among consumers. MCMC noted that Buletin TV3 had issued a denial regarding the content, which was edited using their visual identity.
In a related development, MCMC received a complaint from Buletin TV3 stating that the viral fake content did not originate from them but from a third party. The investigation is being conducted under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which imposes a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment for up to two years, or both upon conviction.
MCMC emphasized its serious stance on the misuse of social media platforms for spreading false information. "Stern action will be taken against any individual found to have violated existing laws," it added. The public is reminded to use social media responsibly and not misuse communication facilities in a way that could affect community harmony and public order.
