Ministry of Higher Education Sends Support Team to POLISAS After Student Death

Kuantan:The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has deployed the 'Counsellor on Wheels' team to offer psychological support to students at Politeknik Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (POLISAS) in Pahang. This action follows the suspected murder of a student on Tuesday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MOHE's secretary-general, Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim, stated that registered counsellors and related experts have been mobilized to assist the families and friends of the victim. He noted that various university counselling departments have been asked to provide psychological assistance, and the counsellors have already traveled to Kuantan to meet with students.

Dr Aminuddin emphasized the need for psychological support due to the potential traumatic impact of the isolated incident on other students. He called for the involvement of the higher education community and society at large to address the issue.

Dr Shamsuri Abdullah, director-general of the Department of Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges (JPPKK), stated that the investigation into the case has been handed over to the police. He assured that JPPKK prioritizes student safety and welfare, including for those not living in the dormitory. He expressed the hope that the polytechnic's student affairs department would be more attentive to the needs and safety of students residing outside official accommodations.

The incident involved a 19-year-old POLISAS student allegedly murdered by her boyfriend at a house in Jalan Air Putih, Kuantan. Kuantan district police chief ACP Ashari Abu Samah reported that a MERS 999 call was received around 4.32 am from the victim's boyfriend.
