Melaka: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Melaka and Negeri Sembilan successfully thwarted a syndicate's attempt to smuggle chemicals, suspected to be used in drug processing, valued at nearly RM4.96 million through the waters of Klebang. The interception occurred on Tuesday, August 11.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, MMEA Melaka and Negeri Sembilan director Maritime Captain Salehuddin Zakaria reported that the incident took place during a routine patrol at 9.06 pm. The agency's assets discovered six boxes wrapped in black plastic on the coast of Pantai Klebang, containing 67 bottles of liquid chemicals believed to be used for synthesizing drugs. The total value of the seized materials on the black market is estimated to be approximately RM4.96 million.

Salehuddin explained that no arrests were made at the scene as the suspect likely abandoned the materials upon detecting the authorities' presence. All confiscated items were transported to the MMEA Melaka and Negeri Sembilan office for further investigation by the appropriate officers.

The case is currently being investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952 due to the involvement of controlled chemicals intended for producing dangerous drugs. Salehuddin emphasized MMEA's commitment to enhancing patrols, intelligence, and strategic cooperation with other security agencies to combat cross-border criminal activities effectively.

He also urged coastal communities and fishermen to act as 'eyes and ears' for the authorities by reporting any suspicious sea activities via the 999 emergency line or contacting the Maritime Operations Centre, which operates round the clock.
