Kuala lumpur: The Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) should take a stronger leadership role in aiding Malaysian oil and gas services and equipment (OGSE) companies to expand internationally and build long-term industry resilience, as stated by Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister emphasized the significance of preparing the OGSE industry for uncertainty due to recent geopolitical developments in West Asia. He highlighted the need for positioning local companies to seize new opportunities during recovery and rebuilding efforts. Akmal Nasrullah stressed the importance of Malaysian OGSE companies being ready to act quickly, compete effectively, and deliver value beyond Malaysia's borders.
The minister's remarks came during the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021-2030 Implementation Steering Committee Meeting, which he chaired. The meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the blueprint's implementation and discussing strategies to enhance the competitiveness of Malaysian OGSE companies in international markets. He underscored MPRC's pivotal role as the Ministry of Economy's agency responsible for OGSE industry development, emphasizing the need to coordinate and accelerate efforts for Malaysian companies to enter and expand in overseas markets.
Akmal Nasrullah pointed out the necessity of reducing dependency on domestic business and encouraged positioning local OGSE players to capture opportunities in West Asia and other growth markets. He called for MPRC to lead the effort in coordination, implementation, and tracking real progress in the sector. He also mentioned that existing initiatives support Malaysian companies in expanding abroad, urging MPRC to take a leading role in building capacity, opening market access, and translating overseas opportunities into business outcomes.
MPRC president and chief executive officer Mohd Yazid Ja'afar highlighted the corporation's ongoing efforts to facilitate collaborations and strategic partnerships among Malaysian OGSE companies. Initiatives like the MPRC Regional Champions Programme (RCP), the OGSE Strategic Partnership Support Programme, and the Growth Beyond OGSE (GBO) Programme aim to enhance the industry's competitiveness for international projects while exploring opportunities in energy transition sectors adjacent to the traditional oil and gas industry.
Mohd Yazid noted how these efforts align with the country's energy security, affordability, and sustainability goals, especially as global industries seek to build resilience amid volatile conditions. He reported that more than RM77.2 million in revenue had been generated from projects commercialized under the OGSE Development Grant (OGSE DG) since its introduction in April 2021. The grant, renewed under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), offers a 70:30 matching grant of up to RM250,000 until 2030 to support local OGSE small and medium enterprises and mid-tier companies in adopting technology, driving innovation, and increasing exports.
As of May 31, 2026, over 600 OGSE companies had been facilitated in export growth, technology development, access to financing, and strategic partnerships under the OGSE Blueprint. Additionally, more than 500 OGSE talents have been trained and upskilled, while over RM2 billion in export sales have been generated through programs organized by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE).
