New Royal Malaysian Navy Base to Be Established in Muara Tebas

Muara Tebas: Muara Tebas has been identified as the site for the new Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN) Naval Region 4 Headquarters (Mawilla 4), according to Defence Force Chief General Datuk Mohd Nizam Jaffar. He stated that after considering various factors, including facilities and maintenance costs, Muara Tebas was found to be more suitable than the initial location in Bintulu.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, preliminary discussions with the Sarawak government have been held, and both parties have agreed to the relocation to Muara Tebas. General Mohd Nizam emphasized that if the base were in Bintulu, maintenance costs would be higher. Considerations included costs, feasibility studies, and infrastructure for the base.

General Mohd Nizam highlighted that the new base will be one of the most modern naval bases in Sarawak, with capabilities comparable to the RMN Base in Teluk Sepangar, Sabah. He mentioned that the Armed Forces would visit the site in Muara Tebas to discuss the next steps, noting the necessity of an RMN base in Sarawak.

Regarding border security, General Mohd Nizam stressed the importance of balancing the number of control posts between Malaysia and Indonesia. He suggested conducting an assessment to establish joint posts to strengthen border security further. Currently, there are five joint Malaysia-Indonesia posts, and there is a need to enhance facilities at Immigration, Customs, and Quarantine (ICQ) complexes along the border.

General Mohd Nizam announced plans for a working visit in May, involving the Home Ministry, Defence Ministry, Customs, and Immigration departments to discuss a more integrated border control strategy.
