Pontian: Malakoff Corporation Bhd today confirmed that no fatalities or injuries were reported following a fire at its Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant (TBEPP) in Pontian last night.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malakoff stated that the affected areas have been safely cordoned off, with precautionary measures taken to protect staff, on-site personnel, and the surrounding community. The fire, which broke out at around 8 pm, was successfully extinguished at 3.45 am with assistance from the plant's internal emergency response team (ERT) and the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
A joint investigation with JBPM is underway to determine the root cause of the incident, with the situation remaining under control through continuous monitoring and water blanketing at the site. Earlier, Pontian Baru Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) senior operations commander, Assistant Fire Superintendent Mahadir Mamat, reported that the fire started at the Flue Gas Desulfurisation (FGD) unit and chimney tunnel of the TBEPP.
He noted that 22 personnel from three fire stations-Pontian, Pekan Nenas, and Pontian Baru-along with the Benut volunteer fire brigade, were deployed to the scene after an emergency call was received at 8.22 pm. The blaze destroyed about 70 percent of the facility's FGD section.
