Over 100 Bernama Employees Attend Briefing on ‘Sharenting’ Risks

Kuala lumpur: More than 100 staff members of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) participated in a briefing about the potential risks associated with 'sharenting' on social media, during a talk titled 'Sharenting: Sharing Joy or Inviting Danger'.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the hybrid session, which included Bernama staff from both the headquarters and state bureaus, was delivered by Saiful Ridzwan Mat Darus, the deputy director of the Institutional Relations and Strategic Engagement Department at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Saiful Ridzwan explained that 'sharenting' involves parents excessively sharing information about their children, especially those who are underage, on social media platforms. He emphasized the potential dangers of sharing details such as photos and activity information in a time when artificial intelligence (AI) technology can manipulate such data.

Saiful Ridzwan highlighted the risks of overexposing children's data, noting that manipulated photos and information, particularly when altered by AI for malicious purposes, could lead to vulnerabilities such as bullying. He pointed out that Bernama was the inaugural venue for this briefing session, which is intended to be extended to other agencies to promote awareness of safe internet practices.

Additionally, Juliana Yek Yen Chyng, the assistant director of MCMC's Institutional Relations and Strategic Engagement Department, contributed to the briefing by addressing concerns about internet misuse, particularly AI deepfake scams on social media. She noted that AI technology can now mimic voices and faces in videos, which many individuals are unaware of. Juliana emphasized the significance of the course in raising public awareness, as some people use celebrities' images and voices to create deceptive videos that can lead to scams or the spread of false information.
