Perlis: The Perlis State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rus'sele Eizan will formally notify the Election Commission (EC) next week of the unexpected vacancies involving three seats. Rus'sele said the state assembly has 21 days to inform the EC following yesterday's announcement that the Chuping, Bintong and Guar Sanji seats had fallen vacant.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rus'sele mentioned that they need some time to complete several matters before submitting the formal notification to the EC. At a press conference at the Seri Putra Complex, Rus'sele announced the unexpected vacancies after the memberships of the three PAS assemblymen for the constituencies ceased with immediate effect, in accordance with Clause (1)(a)(ii) of Article 50A of the Perlis Constitution.
He also stated that by-elections are necessary to fill the vacancies in the interest of government stability, despite the Perlis state assembly having completed three years of its term on December 18. Earlier reports suggested that several Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen in the state had allegedly met the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, to express a loss of confidence and withdraw support for Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli.
Following this, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang issued a statement stating that the party had terminated the membership of its three Perlis assemblymen with immediate effect, in accordance with Clause 76 and Clause 15A(1)(b) of the PAS Constitution (Amendment 2025). In the 15th General Election, PN won 14 of the 15 state seats, nine by PAS and five by Bersatu, while PKR won the remaining seat.
