Kuala Terengganu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his hope that incidents such as the assault of a disabled man at Pasar Tani Padang Astaka Chukai, near Kemaman, will not happen again.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister's political secretary, Datuk Azman Abidin, stated that Anwar wishes for Malaysians to learn from the unfortunate incident involving Ahmad Nor Al Faizan Jusoh, a disabled individual. Azman emphasized the Prime Minister's concern that such incidents might cast a negative image on society, highlighting the troubling aspects of bystanders witnessing and not intervening during the assault on a disabled person in public. "It should not have happened. Malays are known to be patient people, so when something like this happens, it shows there is a problem in our society," Azman remarked to reporters after visiting Ahmad Nor Al Faizan at the Psychiatric Ward of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital.
The assault incident, according to Azman, was a consequence of certain individuals' lack of patience, prompting them to take the law into their own hands. During his visit, Azman spent about 30 minutes with Ahmad Nor Al Faizan, noting that the victim's condition is stable despite the injuries sustained. Ahmad Nor Al Faizan is expected to be discharged from the hospital within a day or two.
A viral video, lasting one minute and 52 seconds, had circulated on social media, depicting a man being beaten and dragged by several individuals at the Pasar Tani Padang Astaka Chukai. According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the incident arose when the 47-year-old victim rode his motorcycle into the farmers' market area, accidentally striking a stall and causing its food items to fall.
To date, six men, aged between 18 and 60, have been detained to assist with the investigation.
