Kuala lumpur: The Selangor government has proposed adding petanque, muay thai, and silambam as new sports for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Selangor, said State Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Najwan, who is also chairman of the SUKMA 2026 Selangor Organising Committee, stated that the proposal will be submitted to the SUKMA Supreme Council soon, with a final decision expected by August 15. He noted that the approval of the proposal relies on the consensus of all state representatives attending the council meeting, which will be chaired by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh.
Mohd Najwan highlighted that during the Supreme Council meeting on August 5, the state government received requests from national and state sports associations to reconsider the inclusion of additional sports. Consequently, the Selangor State Executive Council meeting, chaired by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, decided to propose petanque, muay thai, and silambam to the Supreme Council.
At a media briefing on SUKMA preparations held at Bangunan Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, Mohd Najwan reported that the overall preparations are more than 50 percent complete, including facility upgrades, with all work anticipated to be finished by March next year. He also addressed pickleball's exclusion, stating that while the sport is gaining popularity, its inclusion in the Games is considered premature at this stage.
