Iskandar puteri: Sunway Big Box Retail Park in Johor marked the 2026 Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration with a Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) recognition for creating the Largest Horse Replica Made of Origami Angpow.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the installation, standing about 4.5 meters tall at the mall's Main Concourse, was unveiled as part of its CNY 2026 campaign, 'Galloping into Prosperity.' Sunway Big Box Retail Park stated that the horse was officially certified by MBOR as the largest of its kind in Malaysia, and it is also believed to be the largest horse-shaped origami structure ever constructed.
Sunway Malls (Southern Region) senior general manager, Dr. KS Wong, explained that the campaign was designed to transcend festive decorations by emphasizing sustainability and community collaboration. 'Chinese New Year is a time of renewal, hope, and togetherness. This year, we wanted to create something purposeful; not just visually impactful, but meaningful in how it was brought to life,' he mentioned in the statement.
Dr. Wong highlighted that the horse replica was crafted using recycled angpow, symbolizing blessings and prosperity while promoting environmentally conscious celebrations. He noted that more than 500 hours of collective effort over 21 days went into producing thousands of origami pieces that formed the structure. 'Every fold represents an individual contribution, and together they form something extraordinary. This record belongs to the entire community involved,' Wong added.
The project involved educational institutions including Raffles University, SJK (C) Cheah Fah, SJK (C) Foon Yew 1, SK Pengkalan Rinting, and Starnamics Learning Centre, with support from JCI Junior Chamber International South Key. The unveiling event was attended by officials from Tourism Malaysia Southern Region, Majestic Tourism Johor, Majlis Bandaraya Iskandar Puteri, and MBOR.
In conjunction with the campaign, Sunway Big Box Retail Park is hosting a range of festive activities, including a CNY bazaar, cultural performances, and interactive workshops, as well as World of Exotics from Jan 29 to Feb 16 and a special real-life horse appearance. Throughout the 'Galloping into Prosperity' CNY campaign that runs until Feb 22, shoppers can enjoy festive redemptions, including angpow giveaways paired with jasmine rice, shopping vouchers, and customized prosperity bowl sets with spending thresholds from RM150 to RM500.
