Hangzhou: Technology in the agricultural sector can only be considered successful if its adoption increases crop yields and boosts farmers' income, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu. According to BERNAMA News Agency, this approach was discussed at the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting in Hangzhou, China. The meeting also focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and technology in agriculture. Mohamad emphasized that while AI and technology are important, the ultimate measure of success lies in whether farmers' yields increase, their income rises, and the people's food supply remains sufficient. Mohamad detailed Malaysia's commitment to empowering the national agricultural sector through initiatives like the Large-Scale Smart Padi Field (SMART SBB) programme. This programme involves 18,650 padi farmers across 92 locations, covering over 46,500 hectares. The use of mechanisation, structured management, and technology in t hese areas has enabled yields of around six to seven metric tonnes per hectare. He highlighted that the development in these areas demonstrates that appropriate technology and effective management can significantly increase farmers' yields. Mohamad shared his personal experience in agricultural technology adoption through tilapia farming using the biofloc system. This system can produce approximately 450 kilogrammes of fish per tank with a six-metre diameter. Mohamad stressed the importance of formulating policies based on firsthand experiences in farming and breeding. He noted that grounding oneself in these experiences is crucial to identifying which technologies are genuinely beneficial for farmers.
