Lata ulu kasar: A female student of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) Gong Badak Campus, Kuala Nerus drowned while trying to save her friend who was drowning at Lata Ulu Kasar here today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Setiu district police chief Supt Mohd Zain Mat Dris stated that the victim, Suraya Hassan, 22, from Batu Pahat, Johor, along with seven other friends from the same university, had visited the picnic spot. The police received an emergency call at about 1.48 pm informing them of the incident.

Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred while the victim was taking a bath. Another friend, Nur Najwa Farina Mohamed, 25, noticed that their friend, identified as Adilah, was struggling in the pool. Both Suraya and Nur Najwa attempted to save Adilah, but unfortunately, Suraya drowned while Najwa, who also nearly drowned, was rescued.

Mohd Zain informed that the surviving victim was rushed to the Setiu Hospital Emergency Unit and treated as an outpatient. Suraya's body was sent to the same hospital's Forensic Unit for a post-mortem.
