Kuala lumpur: DAP has proposed that the 16th General Election (GE16) be held simultaneously for both Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies (DUN), especially in Peninsular states, to ensure better party preparations and cost savings. DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the proposal should be considered to ensure a smoother democratic process and more effective political strategies, particularly for parties under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke highlighted that in the last general election, polls had to be held separately due to several factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he suggested that in a more stable political situation, state governments, especially those under PH, should discuss this matter with the Federal Government. Loke emphasized the importance of coordination between state and federal levels to serve the interests of the people and the nation. He also pointed out that despite the dissolution of State Assemblies being under state jurisdiction, the decision to dissolve Parliament lies with the Prime Minister. Loke assured that the party aims to be well-prepared for the elections, noting that although Parliament's term can extend until the end of 2027, several states such as Melaka, Johor, and Sarawak will reach the end of their terms earlier, around 2026. For the record, the State Assemblies of Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu are expected to expire in 2028. Loke commented on the seat allocation within the Unity Government, maintaining that any seat won by a party must remain with that party. He stressed the importance of non-contesting agreements within the Unity Government framework. Loke clarified that while DAP encourages cooperation within the Unity Government, it does not compel its partners to continue such cooperation. He emphasized the party's commitment to the Unity Government's success and its readiness for future collaboration.
