Kuala Lumpur: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stated that offering free toll during festive seasons does not alleviate traffic congestion on toll highways. He emphasized the necessity for road users to alter their behavior and meticulously plan their journeys during these peak times.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid highlighted that the government's compensation to toll concessionaires amounts to more than RM35 million daily. While this does not involve direct cash payments, the concession periods are extended, failing to address congestion issues. He made these remarks in response to queries about the government's decision to discontinue free tolls during festive periods.
Ahmad Zahid, also serving as the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, made these comments following the Rural Business Challenge (RBC) 2.0 Winners Award Ceremony. He mentioned that the Cabinet's decision to cease free toll provisions was based on a recommendation by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He urged toll users to plan their travel schedules better, suggesting that destinations can be adjusted to avoid congestion. He stressed the need for a shift in road users' mindset from expecting discounts or free tolls as "gifts" to planning their travels more effectively.
Alexander Nanta had previously reported that the Cabinet decided to end free tolls during festive seasons last year. Instead, the government plans to implement a more targeted approach to manage highway traffic during these times.
At the RBC 2.0 event, Ahmad Zahid encouraged rural entrepreneurs to be adventurous in expanding their businesses. He urged them to embrace digital platforms, enhance their business acumen, and develop strategic networks and collaborations. The event recognized 45 rural youth entrepreneurs who were awarded business grants totaling RM15 million.
