Glasgow 2026: Irene Jane Lifts Bronze In Commonwealth Games Debut

Kuala lumpur: National weightlifter Irene Jane Henry won the bronze medal in the women's 48 kilogrammes (kg) category at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games here, today. The 21-year-old Sabahan produced a confident performance on her Commonwealth Games debut to finish third overall with a total lift of 167kg, comprising 77kg in the snatch and 90kg in the clean and jerk at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Armadillo.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the gold medal was won by India's Olympic medallist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu, who recorded a total lift of 190kg, while Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong took silver with 168kg. Mirabai broke all three of her own Games records, lifting 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk while also setting a new total lift record.

Irene Jane's success delivered another medal for Malaysia in weightlifting after national ace Mohamad Aniq Kasdan had earlier secured the contingent's first gold medal in the men's 60kg event. Also on the medal list was para powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin, who took bronze in the men's lightweight event.
