Reduce Outdoor Activities Amid Peak UV Radiation, Warns Ahmad Zahid

Kuala lumpur: The public is being urged to minimize outdoor activities during peak ultraviolet (UV) radiation hours, specifically between 11 am and 4 pm, as the nation undergoes the Southwest Monsoon expected to persist until September.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi emphasized the importance of taking special care of children, senior citizens, and individuals working outdoors during this period of heightened temperatures, reduced rainfall, and clearer skies. He noted that the ozone layer acts as Earth's natural barrier against UV radiation, but its effectiveness can be influenced by factors such as the sun's position, cloud coverage, ozone levels, and other atmospheric conditions.

Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the National Disaster Management Council, advised that aside from limiting outdoor exposure, people should adopt protective measures. These include applying sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, wearing appropriate clothing, hats, and UV-protection sunglasses, and maintaining sufficient hydration.

He further urged the public to stay informed about current weather conditions and adhere to guidelines and advisories from MET Malaysia, the Malaysian Meteorological Department. "Take care of yourself, take care of your family and do not take lightly the risks of prolonged exposure to sunlight," he cautioned.
