Selangor: Selangor's success at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 must serve as a catalyst to strengthen grassroots sports development by providing consistent competition platforms for the youth. The Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, said regular competitions are crucial to ensuring young athletes not only remain active but also have clear targets to train for and develop a competitive mindset.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tengku Amir Shah emphasized that grassroots development has always been important to him, including his involvement with the Selangor Youth Community before he became more deeply involved in football. He stated that continuous participation in competitions is essential for youths to cultivate a winning and goal-oriented mindset, which he believes is key to the development of all sports.

Tengku Amir Shah made these comments in response to a question from the moderator at the NADI Connecting Wellness, Fitness and Sports With RMS event before officiating the event. He also highlighted the selection of several sports for Selangor SUKMA 2026 as a strategic decision that provided young athletes with opportunities to showcase their quality and competitiveness across various disciplines.

Hosts Selangor emerged as overall champions of SUKMA 2026, securing a total of 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals, marking a significant achievement for the state.

Additionally, Tengku Amir Shah shared his experience in establishing the Selangor Champions League before his involvement with the Football Association of Selangor (FAS), illustrating how community-level competitions can identify talent and boost competitiveness. He suggested that this approach could be extended to other sports gaining popularity, such as pickleball and chess.

Earlier at the event, which gathered 50 wellness, fitness, and sports leaders, Tengku Amir Shah engaged with participants to strengthen the community and build a cohesive direction for the sector.
